Opening prayer
Lord Jesus, lead us close to your Cross. Open our hearts to your love, give us sorrow for our sins, and teach us to accompany those who suffer. Amen.
At each station you may say the traditional response: We adore Thee, O Christ, and we bless Thee, because by Thy holy Cross Thou hast redeemed the world.
The fourteen stations combine Gospel events with traditional devotional scenes. The falls, Veronica, and the meeting with Mary on the road are identified as tradition below.
Station 1
Jesus is condemned to death
Luke 23:13–25
Jesus stands before human judgment. Fear and the wish to satisfy a crowd can distort our choices. Lord, give us courage to speak truth and defend the dignity of someone treated unjustly.
Intention: Pray for people denied a fair hearing.
Station 2
Jesus takes up his Cross
John 19:16–17
Jesus carries the Cross toward Calvary. His love remains present in a road of suffering. Lord, strengthen those carrying a burden they did not choose, and make us ready to offer practical support.
Intention: Remember someone living with a difficult responsibility.
Station 3
Jesus falls the first time
Traditional devotional scene
This station invites us to contemplate the weight of the Cross. The Gospels do not narrate this fall. Lord, when we stumble, help us accept assistance and begin again with humility.
Intention: Pray for someone discouraged by a setback.
Station 4
Jesus meets his mother
Traditional devotional scene; see Luke 2:34–35
We contemplate Mary’s sorrow and her faithful love. The Gospels do not describe this meeting on the road. Lord, accompany parents who cannot take away their children’s pain, and give their families faithful companions.
Intention: Remember parents worried about a child.
Station 5
Simon of Cyrene helps Jesus
Luke 23:26
Simon is drawn into another person’s burden. Help can come through an unexpected interruption. Lord, make us willing to share difficult work and protect us from looking away when we could help.
Intention: Choose one burden you can help another person carry.
Station 6
Veronica wipes the face of Jesus
Traditional devotional scene
Christian tradition remembers Veronica’s compassionate gesture; the Gospels do not record it. A small act of tenderness matters even when it cannot end the suffering. Lord, teach us the courage of gentle care.
Intention: Pray for nurses, carers, and those who offer comfort.
Station 7
Jesus falls the second time
Traditional devotional scene
In this traditional meditation, we see perseverance amid weakness. Repeated difficulty can tempt us to give up on ourselves or others. Lord, renew our patience and show us how to offer encouragement without judgment.
Intention: Remember someone facing another difficult day.
Station 8
Jesus meets the women of Jerusalem
Luke 23:27–31
Jesus speaks to those mourning along the road. His words call them to look deeply at their lives. Lord, turn our sorrow into conversion and our sympathy into actions that protect future generations.
Intention: Pray for families and communities harmed by violence.
Station 9
Jesus falls the third time
Traditional devotional scene
We pause before a traditional image of profound exhaustion. Some people’s suffering remains almost invisible. Lord, help us notice those who have no strength left to ask, and guide us toward wise and faithful help.
Intention: Pray for people whose needs are overlooked.
Station 10
Jesus is stripped of his garments
John 19:23–24
Even Christ’s clothing becomes an object for others to divide. We remember the dignity of people exposed to humiliation. Lord, guard us from cruelty and give us courage to protect the vulnerable.
Intention: Refuse to share something that humiliates another person.
Station 11
Jesus is nailed to the Cross
Luke 23:33–34
At Calvary we face the cost of sin and the persistence of Christ’s love. Lord, make our hearts attentive to people suffering through human cruelty. Turn us away from revenge and toward justice shaped by mercy.
Intention: Pray for victims and for the conversion of those causing harm.
Station 12
Jesus dies on the Cross
Luke 23:44–46
Pause in silence. Jesus gives himself to the Father. Lord, stay close to the dying, to those who keep watch, and to all who feel abandoned. May your love sustain them when words are no longer enough.
Intention: Keep a quiet moment for the dying and their loved ones.
Station 13
Jesus is taken down from the Cross
John 19:38–40
Friends care for the body of Jesus. Love remains when there is nothing left to achieve or explain. Lord, give gentleness to those who care for the dead, and patient companions to people who mourn.
Intention: Remember someone grieving a recent loss.
Station 14
Jesus is laid in the tomb
John 19:41–42
The tomb holds the stillness of a hope not yet seen. Holy Saturday teaches us to wait without pretending loss is easy. Lord, keep us faithful in unfinished stories and lead us into the hope of your Resurrection.
Intention: Entrust an unresolved sorrow to God.
Closing prayer
Jesus, crucified and risen, thank you for your faithful love. Carry our prayer into the choices of this day. Make us merciful, truthful, and ready to serve. Amen.
