The steps
Prepare
Ask for God’s help, examine your choices, and resolve to turn away from sin. Use the adult or children’s examination.
Begin simply
Make the Sign of the Cross. Tell the priest roughly how long it has been since your last confession. A familiar opening is: “Bless me, Father, for I have sinned.”
Confess honestly
Confess the serious sins you remember, including their kind and number as best you can. Venial sins may also be confessed. Speak about your own choices; ask for help if you are uncertain.
Listen and accept a penance
The priest may offer guidance and assign a penance. Tell him if you do not understand it or cannot carry it out.
Express sorrow and receive absolution
Pray an Act of Contrition when invited. Listen as the priest gives absolution, and respond as he directs.
Give thanks and follow through
Complete your penance and make appropriate efforts to repair harm. Choose a practical step that supports your resolution to change.

Before you arrive
Check the parish’s confession schedule or request an appointment. Arrive with time to pray. If you need an accessible space, an interpreter, or additional time, contact the parish beforehand. Practices such as kneeling behind a screen or sitting face to face vary by church.

Say that at the beginning. A short appointment may give you more time than a busy scheduled session. You can bring a simple outline of what you need to say; you do not need to provide every detail of your life story.
Can this website hear my confession?
