Benedict learns to listen

Benedict grew up in Italy about fifteen hundred years ago. As a young man, he went to Rome to study. Later he chose a quieter life near Subiaco, where he could spend time in prayer. Other people began to seek his guidance.

Benedict helped communities of monks learn to live together. He wrote a Rule: a guide to prayer, work, reading, and caring for one another. A monastery needed many kinds of work. Preparing a meal or welcoming a guest mattered, as well as time in the chapel.

Benedict wanted people to listen carefully. Even a young member of the community might have something wise to share. Living together meant learning patience, admitting mistakes, and thinking about what others needed.

You do not have to live in a monastery to practice listening. When someone speaks today, put down what you are doing for a moment. Listen all the way to the end. Then think of a kind and helpful reply.
