Francis discovers a simpler life

Francis grew up in Assisi, a town in Italy. His family sold cloth, and he once enjoyed fine clothes and lively company. As he grew older, he began to ask what mattered most in his life.

Francis chose to follow Jesus through a simple life. He cared for people who were sick and poor and helped repair small churches. Friends joined him. They became a community known as the Friars Minor.

Francis saw the world around him as a gift from God. In his Canticle of the Creatures he praised God for parts of creation such as the sun, water, and earth. His example reminds us to notice and care for the world we share.

Generosity is not only about money. You can share your time, include someone in a game, or help tidy a shared space. A small act can say: you matter, and I am glad you are here.
