Elizabeth makes room for learning

Elizabeth Ann Seton grew up in New York. She married and became the mother of five children. After her husband died, she faced a difficult new chapter. In time she became Catholic and moved with her family to Maryland.

At Emmitsburg, Elizabeth helped children learn and founded a community of sisters. Teaching meant preparing lessons, paying attention and beginning again when something was difficult. Her community continued its work after her death.

Learning can feel exciting on one day and frustrating on another. Needing help does not mean you have failed. A patient friend can make a hard task feel possible, especially when they listen instead of doing all the work for you.

Ask someone to teach you a small skill, or offer to practice with a person who wants help. Notice effort as well as results. An encouraging word can help someone try again.
