John Bosco welcomes young people

John Bosco was a priest in Turin, Italy. Many young people there needed education, friendship and practical support. He made their care central to his work and helped build a community around them.

His approach to teaching joined reason, faith and loving kindness. He wanted young people to learn through trustworthy relationships. The Salesians continued this work in schools and other places where young people could grow.

Think about arriving somewhere new. You may not know where to sit, what to do or whom to ask. A simple welcome can help: explaining the game, showing someone the way or inviting them to join a group.

Being welcoming also means respecting a person’s answer. They may want a quiet moment before joining in. Offer friendship without pressure, and ask a teacher or another trusted adult if someone needs more help.
