Martin notices who needs care

Martin de Porres lived in Lima, Peru. As a young person he learned skills that helped him care for people who were sick. Later he became a Dominican brother and continued to serve others.

Martin faced unfair treatment because of his background and the color of his skin. That prejudice was wrong. His prayer and practical work helped people see a neighbor who deserved care, whether that person was rich or poor.

Compassion means noticing that someone is having a hard time and thinking about a helpful response. Sometimes the best beginning is to ask what they need. We do not need to guess, take charge or expect a thank-you.

If someone in your family is unwell, a grown-up can tell you how to help. A quiet activity, a kind card or tidying a shared room may be welcome. Small acts can make care easier for everyone.
