Before the group arrives

Read St. Josephine Bakhita and St. Martin de Porres. Use their introductory context and source notes to prepare. Print one participant handout per person. The short reading below is enough to begin; the complete biographies support further study.

1. Welcome and opening prayer · 5 minutes

Welcome everyone and explain the goal. Invite each person to name one word they associate with the theme, with permission to pass. Pray: “God, be with us as we learn. Help us listen honestly and treat one another with care. Amen.”

2. Read and notice · 7 minutes

Read the paragraph aloud once. Leave a minute for each person to underline a detail or write a question.

Josephine Bakhita’s life included the recovery of freedom and a chosen religious vocation. Martin de Porres served people in Lima while facing racial prejudice himself. Their lives invite reflection on freedom, respect and practical care. Admiring their faith should not make enslavement, racism or mistreatment appear acceptable.

3. Discuss · 12 minutes

Begin in pairs for four minutes, then invite the group to share. Take one question at a time.

How does asking what is needed change the way we plan service?
What could make a well-intended act feel disrespectful?
How can a group include people with different abilities, schedules or resources?

4. Put it into practice · 15 minutes

Choose a fictional parish request: the food pantry needs particular items, an older parishioner wants help with a garden, or a newcomer needs directions. Use the service planner to define the need, ask who should be consulted, assign realistic tasks and decide how to follow up. Keep the people served in control of what they share.

5. Choose a next step and pray · 6 minutes

Ask an established parish ministry what help it actually needs, then choose one manageable contribution.

Give everyone a quiet minute to complete the handout. Invite optional sharing, then pray:

God of mercy, help us see our neighbors as people to know and love. Make our service attentive, practical and respectful. Amen.

After the session

At the next gathering, invite a short check-in about the chosen action. Ask what helped and what could be adjusted. Keep the focus on learning and care rather than comparing participants.
