Before the group arrives

Read St. Mary Magdalene and St. George. Use their introductory context and source notes to prepare. Print one participant handout per person. The short reading below is enough to begin; the complete biographies support further study.

1. Welcome and opening prayer · 5 minutes

Welcome everyone and explain the goal. Invite each person to name one word they associate with the theme, with permission to pass. Pray: “God, be with us as we learn. Help us listen honestly and treat one another with care. Amen.”

2. Read and notice · 7 minutes

Read the paragraph aloud once. Leave a minute for each person to underline a detail or write a question.

Mary Magdalene appears in the Gospels as a disciple and witness to the Resurrection. Later preaching sometimes merged her with other women, but the Gospels do not call her a prostitute. George is remembered as a martyr; his dragon story belongs to later legend. A story may have devotional meaning while still needing a clear label about its historical basis.

3. Discuss · 12 minutes

Begin in pairs for four minutes, then invite the group to share. Take one question at a time.

What changes when an author says “the Gospel records,” “according to later tradition,” or “we might reflect”?
How can we appreciate a legend without presenting it as eyewitness history?
Where would you look when two websites give different feast dates?

4. Put it into practice · 15 minutes

Ask small groups to sort these statements: “John 20 presents Mary Magdalene as a Resurrection witness”; “George kills a dragon in a later legend”; “This story invites me to practice courage.” Label them Gospel account, later tradition, and personal reflection. Then have each group write a source-checking question for a saint biography.

5. Choose a next step and pray · 6 minutes

Find one claim in a biography and follow its source note. Record what the source supports and what remains uncertain.

Give everyone a quiet minute to complete the handout. Invite optional sharing, then pray:

God of truth, give us patient minds and honest hearts. Help us learn with humility and share what we learn with care. Amen.

After the session

At the next gathering, invite a short check-in about the chosen action. Ask what helped and what could be adjusted. Keep the focus on learning and care rather than comparing participants.
