Advent invites us to prepare for Christmas and to live in hope of Christ’s coming. Begin with a small practice you can sustain, even during a busy month.
A prayer for Advent
Four weeks, four practices
Make room
Choose a regular moment for prayer. Place a Bible or a prayer card somewhere you will see it. Ask what needs less space in your life so love can have more.
Listen
Read Luke 1:26–38 together. Let each person share a question or detail. Leave a little silence rather than filling every moment with explanation.
Bring joy
Visit or call someone who may be lonely. Let children help make a card or choose a practical kindness.
Welcome Christ
Read Luke 2:1–20. Decide how your household can welcome a guest, support a neighbor, or share with someone in need.
Praying around an Advent wreath
If you use a wreath, gather briefly, light the appropriate candle with adult supervision, read a short passage, and offer an intention. The familiar arrangement is three violet candles and one rose candle; local customs vary. Battery candles are an option for young families.
Walk with Mary and Joseph
Pray the Angelus or the Joyful Mysteries. Read about St. Joseph, and choose a quiet act of care for someone entrusted to you.
Prayer and household practices are original. Consult your parish for its liturgy and Advent schedule.
